The Open is basically the first stage of preparation for the CrossFit Games. Boxes around the world perform five workout competitions within five weeks. For 2017, they are released every Thursday by Reebok CrossFit Games. Scores have to be submitted by the coming Monday.
Everyone and anyone can sign up, so long as they are at least 14 years of age!
These competitions help identify who qualifies to proceed to the next level, which is the Regionals, in May; thereafter, the Games, in August.
In the Regionals the top athletes from a couple of regions compete amongst each other.
All the competitors, thousands of them, get narrowed down to the best 40 women, 40 men, 80 Teens, 220 masters and 40 teams; they compete to determine who is the globally fittest Crossfitter based on a relative scoring system. This means the athletes are scored relative to their fellow competitors rather than independent performance in the events.
But, for us at Kwetu, the games are a chance for each member of our community to determine and/or challenge their own fitness level. Everyone is welcome to join in the Friday Night Lights and do the workouts. The others who do not wish to do so, are encouraged to come with poms poms and cheer on those competing. It is healthy competition done in a friendly environment.
Open begins on February 25th at a cost of only 5,000 Kes. Are you really fit? Dare to find out.
